And… we’re off!
I want to tell you that I just got back from my company launch party, where friends and hangers-on dined at some place swanky and had champagne and generally let the bons temp roulez. Lots of well-wishing and bonhomie. But…
Here I sit in front of the computer with a three-day beard, having just finished a marathon session of working with my web developer to get this website done. I’m excited and terrified, sort of a pale facsimile of how I felt when my kids were born.
There’s a scene from the Princess Bride that’s been running through my mind a lot recently. Miracle Max (Billy Crystal) is arm and arm with Valerie, waving goodbye to the heroic coterie. With fixed smiles on their faces, they say:
It’s that, “Think it’ll work?? It would take a miracle,” line that resonates right now. When people hear about this new venture, they tend to get similar, fixed smiles on their faces. “Oh, well, uh, great!” And I see the wheels turning: “Do I affirm him and wish him well or intervene and give him a brutal reality check?”
The economy is bad. People are hanging on to their disposable income. I am establishing a company that is touting a culture of craftsmanship, when that ethos is dwindling in America. So… Think it’ll make it?
It would take a miracle.
I’m praying for one.
